TOURISM IN ELCHE - ARAB BATHS
According to the Prophet Muhammad: "Hygiene is a manifestation of faith". The Islamic world considers water as a gift of God, and related to wisdom and purity. The Andalusian culture turned this rite into a pleasant activity involving oils and essences. The "hammâns", descendants of the Roman baths, had tiled walls and the rooms were divided by arches and columns, with vaulted ceilings and skylights. These were not only used as a place for rest, but also for social gatherings. The visit to the baths is complemented by an audio source explaining the origins and operation of this public service.
